No WOLSIDE®, no game!

No WOLSIDE®, no game!

PAGANONI®, division of MARIO NAVA S.P.A., distinguishes itself as a leading manufacturer of spare parts for the wire drawing industry, specializing in restoring worn machine components. The company offers a comprehensive range of industry-renowned wear-resistant materials and coatings, such as KERBLACK®, KERSINT®, WOLSIDE®, COLDSIDE®, NIKSINT®, WHITESINT®, AS1000, and STELLITE.

Among them, tungsten carbide, known for its distinctive properties, plays a fundamental role. The term, however, is quite generic, creating ambiguity and lacking clarity on the possible available variants. To dispel any doubts on the matter, it is necessary to outline the intrinsic differences of this chemical compound and its various applications depending on the type.

In the wire drawing industry, it is used as a component of coatings to reduce wear and extend the life of parts thanks to its exceptional resistance. However, not all coatings are the same; it is essential for industry professionals to discern between the various functionalities of available types to prevent performance below expectations. For example, cold-sprayed carbide is sometimes described as having high hardness values due to a higher percentage of tungsten carbide. Drawing conclusions solely based on such data may result in oversimplified analyses; hardness alone, in fact, does not automatically guarantee greater durability. In some cases, excessive hardness could even cause undesirable effects on the drawn product.

There are two main varieties of tungsten carbide-based coatings: cold-sprayed, which is widely used, and hot “fused”, available only from a few selected suppliers. These coatings differ significantly in their characteristics and applications. In this context, PAGANONI® offers both solutions: WOLSIDE® as the "hot-fused" carbide and COLDSIDE® as the cold-sprayed carbide.

What are the differences between WOLSIDE® and COLDSIDE®?

WOLSIDE®
: a registered trademark for “hot-fused” carbide, ideal for applications such as wet wire drawing. Leading wire drawing machine manufacturers worldwide rely on WOLSIDE® for processing copper and aluminum, ensuring performance without the risk of coating detachment.

COLDSIDE®
: a registered trademark for cold-sprayed carbide, suitable for drawing high and low carbon wire with dry drawing machines. However, for low carbon wire, PAGANONI®'s KERBLACK® - a ceramic coating based on chromium oxide with a distinctive glossy black appearance - remains the high-end solution for this kind of application.

PAGANONI® produces high-quality and precision products that are essential to complete a range of advanced and high-performance solutions in the industry.
