CERATIZIT launches the first PCF standard for cemented carbide

CERATIZIT, a prominent name in the field of highly specialized cutting tools, inserts, and hard-material rods, on the occasion of EMO Hanover 2023, has kicked off the introduction of the first Product Carbon Footprint Standard (PCF) for carbide products. Since September 18, the PCF classification of the first wave of products has been displayed in the shop and on all invoices.

“The start of the systematic introduction of PCF figures in our product portfolio is an important milestone. Not only do they allow our customers to calculate their own corporate carbon footprint more accurately. The PCF figures also provide the basis for setting up a strategy to reduce their own emissions,” Executive Board Spokesman Dr Andreas Lackner commented on the launch of CERATIZIT’s PCF offering.

Different service levels
CERATIZIT's service offer around the PCF includes several service levels. For all products already included in the range of services, the PCF class is displayed in the shop and on the invoice at no extra charge. This alphabetical classification with six classes from A to F allows one to know and assess a product’s footprint at a single glance. The second option includes an average PCF value in kg CO2e/kg product, as well as a summary overview of the total carbon footprint related to the listed products and volume manufactured and supplied in a customer-defined period. The most comprehensive service level provides customers with detailed PCF information on every purchased product for which the data is available. At the start, this information will only be available for some products. However, the goal is to gradually expand the range and ultimately provide PCF information for all products.

upGRADE products always come with PCF information
Products from the upGRADE family, which are made from 100% secondary raw materials and have a particularly low PCF, also take on a special position. Also, detailed PCF information is already included in the purchase price. The CT-GS20Y grade for rods for cutting tools and the KLC20+ grade for woodworking are made from strictly selected secondary raw materials and combine premium performance with a particularly low PCF, which is on average around 60% below the PCF of corresponding standard CERATIZIT grades and places them in PCF class “A”.

Externally verified calculation model
The calculation approach is in line with the ISO 14067:2018 standard and has been critically reviewed by a third party, denkstatt, a member of Inogen - Environmental Alliance.

In-depth information about the PCF model on request
Detailed information on the model behind the Product Carbon Footprint calculation will be available in the coming weeks, but can already be requested via the link on the landing page 'PCF Classification' and directly by email to [email protected]. Customers, partners and market companions and all others are all invited to take a look at the model and adopt it if they wish. Only by working together will it be possible to lead the hard metal industry into a more sustainable future.
