Polymeric lubricants for cold forming

Polymeric lubricants for cold forming

Traditional zinc-phosphating - although well established in the pretreatment of cold forming metals - have several potential drawbacks, including high energy consumption and the production of phosphate sludge.

Where the traditional phosphating requires 10 steps (pickling, activation, phosphating, neutralization, soaping, and intermediate rinsings), Henkel's BONDERITE® technology reduces them to 3. This leads to significant advantages in terms of both production efficiency and eco-sustainability.

The water-based polymeric formulations BONDERITE L-FM FL 744 and BONDERITE L-FM FL 735 are already widely used for the treatment of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in cold forming processes (bolts, fasteners, and small parts manufacturing) in the automotive, industrial, and aerospace fields. The brand-new BONDERITE L-FM FL 2020 is an innovative and sustainable water-based coating suitable for heavy cold forging and extrusion of fasteners. This formulation offers superior cost performances, reduced CO2 impact and a much smaller water footprint, and most importantly is also boron-free.

Key features of Henkel's polymeric cold forming lubricants:

Eco-sustainability:
- reduction of CO2 emissions;
- no phosphate sludge;
- energy savings.

Production efficiency:
- increase in production capacity;
- improved lubrication;
- reduced risk of potential cracks;
- longer average mold life.
