A closer look at ABS departments: the Luna rolling mill

Inside ABS’ steel-making facility, the blooms - after being cast - take their way along the steel route in the direction of the LUNA rolling mill. The first stop is the WB furnace, where the blooms (mainly round with diameter 270 mm) are heated to high temperatures according to various criteria such as quality, shape, or application. The furnace can reach a production capacity of 120T/h, the same as the rolling mill, which amounts to half a million tons per year. 19 rolling units and one Kocks finishing stand will then give the bloom the desired shape.

The product range includes round bars from 25 to 120 mm, square bars from 40 to 106 mm, and rods from 13 to 63 mm. Quality is paramount throughout the whole rolling process: in LUNA it is possible to harden and temper, anneal, and check the material both inline and also off-line.

Other equipment for the preparation of the rolling units, profile meters, temperature gauges, pressure gauges, flow gauges, antimix robots, computer systems, advanced automation, and preventive and predictive maintenance complete the picture, following the steel along its journey towards its final destination, the customer.
