Voestalpine chooses FIMI: new slitting line for high-strength steels installed

FIMI is pleased to present the latest slitting line for high-strength steels commissioned by Voestalpine Steel & Service Center and installed at its plant in Linz, Austria. Voestalpine is a world-leading steel group, consisting of about 500 companies operating globally in more than 50 countries.

The customer need was to expand the already wide production range, by adding a new plant for cutting high-strength steel coils into strips, characterized by a high level of automation and control efficiency, and top performances. A request that FIMI could meet thanks to the know-how developed in almost 60 years of activity and with the installation of more than 1500 plants worldwide.

FIMI's slitting lines for thick-gauge, hot-rolled steels have been developed to suit typical applications in structural engineering, crane construction, lifting equipment in general, wind turbine poles, and the tube industry. The standard thickness range is from 1 up to 8 mm, but in some cases, it can go up to 16-18 mm for tubes. These slitting lines require special solutions for the strip feeding process, in particular after the slitting shear, for slitting and handling of scrap, and for recoiling and discharge of slitted coils.

The material to be processed is hot-rolled steel, pickled or not-pickled, according to EN10025/ EN10149/EN10083/EN10084/EN10051 standards, dry and oiled, with tensile strength from 400 N/mm2 to 1500 N/mm2 (up to 10 mm thickness), 1300 N/mm2 (up to 12 mm thickness). Width from 300 up to 1800 mm, thickness from 1.5 up to 12 mm, maximum coil weight 40 Ton.

The line layout is similar to that of other FIMI longitudinal slitting lines for thick gauge, but it presents some specific features and a high level of automation. Thanks to these characteristics, it can deliver excellent performances and guarantee quality and reliability, which are a priority for all FIMI designs.
