Maillefer’s joint cable curing calculation software for flexible vulcanized joints

Maillefer’s joint cable curing calculation software for flexible vulcanized joints

Lengths of XLPE insulated cable core are often limited by extrusion capacity, degassing or basket lay-up. However, these constraints can be easily overcome by using flexible vulcanized joints (FVJ, also known as flexible factory joints). This is particularly useful when you need to extend delivery lengths of extruded subsea cables.

For the XLPE cable to be reliable, the factory joint needs to have similar physical, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties as the cable itself. The characteristics are matched by means of heat vulcanizing extruded cross-linkable PE tapes, placed around the joint. The inner semiconducting screen, insulation and outer semi-conducting screen are processed in separate steps to achieve a joint with a high level of cleanliness and robustness.

Simulation tool for quality joints
Maileffer's joint curing calculation software (JCC), specifically developed for extruded subsea cables, is the perfect tool to ensure the vulcanization process is performed in the most optimal way. The software can simulate and optimize vulcanization time of the restored insulation layer, ensuring sufficient crosslink throughout the insulation. A degassing optimization module provides insight into methane diffusion, allowing to fine-tune degassing time.

Maillefer also provides consultation services for equipment and other consumables employed in the manufacture of factory joints of HVAC subsea cables up to 1600mm2/220kV (245) kV. Assistance for qualification purposes, including Type- Test (T-T) and/or Pre-Qualification (PQ), completes the package.
