MFL GROUP in the Middle East: a rigid screening and armoring strander by Caballé

With more than 120 years of industrial legacy, MFL GROUP is an Italian leading engineering and manufacturing company supplying high-performing wire drawing, stranding, armoring, and extrusion machinery for wire, ropes, and cables production. MFL GROUP’s equipment is manufactured under five brands: MARIO FRIGERIO, FRIGECO, CABALLE, OM LESMO, EURODRAW ENERGY, and KOCH.

Today’s article is all about Construcciones Mecánicas Caballé (CMC) Barcelona, which has recently completed the setup of a large rigid cage stranding line for LV, MV, and HV power cables in an important cable manufacturing site in the Middle East. In particular, this cage strander can accommodate up to 48 reels (6 bays x 8 reels per row). Although the line is currently running with 2 wires per reel (thus outputting up to 96-wire screened cables), this strander can fit in up to 3 wires per reel — hence screening cables with up to 144 copper or aluminum wires and armoring cables with up to 144 steel wires.

This piece of equipment stands out thanks to a variety of features and tools. Here below are just a few of these:

- AC motors for flexible and safe reel changing;
- low-friction pintle design for fine wires (down to ø0.7 mm copper wires);
- pneumatic actuator;
- intuitive HMI and Sinamics PLC;
- Siemens SiMotion managing system;
- movable die stand, for perfectly smooth screening operations;
- both metallic and non-metallic taping heads;
- wire preformers;
- pulling capstan with 4500 kg pulling force;
- soundproof cabin to ensure 80 dB noise level.
