Reels, spools, drums, and bobbins: the basics and the latest

The present issue of “The basics and the latest” takes into consideration reels, spools, drums, and bobbins focusing on their application in the wire and cable (but also ropes and tubes) industry.
With the column “The basics and the latest” expometals.net aims to provide basic information to young industry professionals and other readers interested in obtaining fundamental knowledge about manufacturing and processing technologies and related issues. The information was provided by Dipl.-Ing. Konrad Dengler.

In the first paragraph of this article, which includes the definition of reels and related terms, you can find the link to the permanent handout we prepared with information about materials, applications, specifications, literature, and more. Make sure you read that section!
Next, you'll find information on market trends, key industry associations, upcoming events; at the bottom, what we call "Latest trends": a list of newly published market surveys and other studies which concern directly or indirectly the reels, spools, and drums industries.

Definition of reels, spools, drums, etc.
Reels, spools, drums, and bobbins are cylindrical objects which can be made out of plastic, metal, wood, even plywood, used to wrap finished or semi-finished flexible products, such as wires, ropes, cables, and more. What is the technical difference between reels, spools, drums, and bobbins? What are the main types and, what are the features to consider? Let's find out together in our handout >>

Market and trends
The global wire and cable industry, a major user of reels, is rapidly growing as their products are necessary to transmit electricity and electronic data. The continuously growing demand for further transmission capacities is driving the global spools market.
Reel manufacturers are continuously confronted with new challenges. There is always a trend towards reels that are able to carry increased loads and tractive forces, towards the application of new plastic material formulations and the use of recyclable materials (“green” reels). RFID technology simplifies the spool management and the integration of spools into Industry 4.0 applications. To reduce the packaging costs wire and cable manufacturers started to use returnable spools, which is another driving force of the spools market.
