"The first rolling mill entirely powered by green energy"

We are talking about a rolling mill for medium-large beams with a capacity of 700,000 tons per year. An expenditure of more than 180 million euros. 150 new jobs. One of the largest investments in the long steel industry made in recent years in Italy and in Europe will bear the signature of Duferco Travi e Profilati S.p.a, the leading Italian producer of rolled steel beams for the construction industry.
The company from S. Zeno Naviglio (Brescia), which has recently changed its name following the exit of its American partner Nucor from the corporate structure, strongly wanted this initiative, that crowns a 25-year-old industrial dream. The new rolling mill will be fully (and vertically) integrated with the steel plant and devoted to maximum environmental sustainability.
The new plant, developed by SMS Group, will be equipped with the most modern technologies in terms of energy saving and digitalization. As far as the energy needs are concerned, the electricity used will come entirely from renewable sources thanks to the stipulation of a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) with a wind producer. The walking beam furnace will feature innovative burners capable of being powered also by mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen.
Duferco aims at achieving total decarbonization in the shortest possible time, demonstrating that the issue of environmental sustainability can be at the center of attention, even for those who produce steel.
The extraordinary logistic location at the center of the Italian and European beams market makes this new mill crucial, also in terms of competitiveness.
