Case study: achieving superior surface preparation with Amacast stainless steel shot by Ervin

Established in 1920, Ervin is a global leader in steel and stainless steel cast abrasives. With a rich history of innovation and a commitment to unmatched quality, Ervin sets the industry standard.

In this article, we will explore a compelling case study featuring Ervin's collaboration with KST Kugel-Strahltechnik, a renowned German subcontractor specializing in surface preparation. Known for its impressive fleet of 28 cutting-edge blasting machines, KST provides the perfect backdrop for examining Ervin's latest project.

The challenge

KST was looking for a way to increase abrasive life and improve surface finish with a single product: the company faced various challenges in the cleaning of a wide range of components, including aluminum and zinc pressure die-castings, stampings, springs, and screws. Its goal was not only to eliminate contamination like rust and scale but also to achieve bright surfaces while ensuring the abrasive used had a prolonged lifetime. This approach is crucial for minimizing the overall blasting costs. Additionally, certain parts necessitate peening for their specific requirements.

The solution

Ervin conducted a controlled trial at the customer's site, selecting its top-of-the-line chrome-nickel stainless steel shot, known as Amacast. This innovative shot is produced using a unique manufacturing process, resulting in a highly durable material with excellent hardness properties. The trial involved monitoring the existing process and abrasive, followed by conducting the same evaluation using the new Amacast material.

Commenting on the study, Sascha Berger, Ervin Country Manager for Germany, stated:

Running a controlled trial at the customer’s machine is the perfect way to demonstrate the performance of products to all parties.

The results

Through the application of Ervin’s Amacast abrasive, the customer was able to achieve over 10% saving in abrasive consumption, as well as fantastic, bright, and attractive surfaces: the utilization of stainless steel abrasive provides workpieces with enhanced resistance to corrosion and proves beneficial in applications where design and appearance hold significance. Moreover, Amacast exhibited superior performance by delivering a finer and more lightweight finish, further enhancing the appeal of KST's final products to customers. The exceptional hardness of Amacast contributed to achieving a peening effect on specific components.

KST was highly impressed by the results of Ervin branded products. Their needs were fully satisfied, as expressed by Marco Heinemann's words:

That’s by some distance the best stainless steel abrasive we’ve ever used.

Ervin is proud to have contributed to its customer success in its reference field through the use of its innovative product.
