Round pipe plugs by Panozzo: ABS inserts vs. ribbed plugs

Round pipe plugs by Panozzo: ABS inserts vs. ribbed plugs

How do you correctly measure a pipe plug?

The answer depends on the product family. Panozzo Srl's range of male plugs for round pipes, designed to fit inside the tube, includes rigid ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) inserts and ribbed polyethylene plugs. The former require a precise fit in terms of diameter and wall thickness, while the latter adapt to different pipe wall thicknesses thanks to their ribs. Female plugs and non-round pipes are excluded from this overview to ensure a comparison of like-for-like sizes.

Round ABS inserts

ABS inserts are rigid and have no ribs, so the fit depends entirely on the dimensional accuracy of the pipe. The catalog identifies them by diameter and wall thickness (TABS25X2, for example), with a separate product code for each combination.

Their function is primarily decorative, which is why they are mainly used in indoor and outdoor furniture, as well as in marine applications. Their chrome plating is designed to withstand water. Three finishes are available:

  • Chrome-plated, matching the look of steel pipes;
  • Satin-finished, with a satin chrome finish;
  • Black.

Chrome-plated and black versions cover diameters from 8 to 120 mm, while satin-finished versions are available up to 90 mm. Compatible pipe wall thicknesses range from 1 to 5 mm, with the widest selection of combinations available for diameters between 22 and 50 mm.

Ribbed plugs

The ribs compensate for variations in pipe wall thickness, and the catalog includes dedicated versions for thicker walls, identified by a "+" in the product code.

  • Round ribbed plugs: black polyethylene (other colors available upon request), from 10 to over 190 mm, including several inch-based sizes (25.4 and 50.8 mm, for example).
  • Low-profile head: black LDPE, from 10 to 88.9 mm, for wall thicknesses of 0.8–3.5 mm, suitable for applications requiring minimal protrusion.
  • Ball head: black polyethylene, from 16 to 60 mm, for wall thicknesses of 1–2.5 mm, featuring a rounded head.

Chrome-plated ribbed plugs

Chrome-plated round ribbed plugs combine features of both product families: polyethylene ribs and a chrome-plated finish, with diameters ranging from 13 to 80 mm. Unlike black plugs, the catalog specifies a separate product code for each individual wall thickness for several diameters (25, 50, 60 and 80 mm). Please note: in this case, the chrome plating is not water-resistant, so these plugs should be avoided in humid environments.
