A hybrid loop for a specific requirement: the Mollificio Modenese case

Extension springs are typically manufactured with German, English, or extended loops, often using the same design at both ends. In some applications, however, standard solutions are not enough, and a custom geometry is required. This was the case with a recent extension spring manufactured by Mollificio Modenese, featuring loops with a special configuration developed to meet specific application requirements.
The spring is made from Ø 6.50 mm SH carbon steel wire and features non-standard loops with a smaller diameter than the spring body. Their geometry combines elements of both extended and English loops in a custom design tailored to the customer’s specifications.
The loop is traditionally one of the most critical areas of an extension spring, as it is subject to high bending and torsional stresses that can contribute to fatigue failure. For this reason, the load should be applied as closely as possible along the spring axis, minimizing lateral and off-axis forces.
When the loop geometry is modified, as in this case by combining features of extended and English loops, particular attention must be paid to the transition area. Careful design helps reduce stress concentrations and preserve the spring's service life.
From customer requirements to a custom spring
Mollificio Modenese used an OMD TM9 to manufacture this component, producing an extension spring specifically configured for the application.
The following video shows the OMD TM9 in operation, from wire forming through to the creation of the special loop geometry.
This project reflects Mollificio Modenese’s approach to custom spring manufacturing: starting from the application’s technical requirements and translating them into components with tailored dimensions, materials, and geometries.
The company manufactures tension, compression, and torsion springs, as well as other elastic components, handling medium- and high-volume production runs alongside samples, small batches, and individual pieces. When required, Mollificio Modenese also supports customers with spring calculations and material selection.
This level of production flexibility allows the company to address a wide range of industrial needs, including applications for which standard spring configurations are not suitable.
