A tailor-made steel suit: the Defim Orsogril design for Feralpi Stahl

In Riesa, Germany, Feralpi Stahl has recently inaugurated a new state-of-the-art rolling mill designed for the production of spoolers—hot rebar coils—available in coils weighing up to 8 tons. This capacity sets a world record and strengthens the Feralpi Group’s position among Europe’s leading steel producers.

The 300-meter rollerway: beyond its technical function

One of the most iconic features of the project is the 300-meter rollerway, a tunnel connecting the steel mill to the new rolling area, designed for transferring the incandescent billets.

For the cladding, Feralpi Stahl chose Defim Orsogril’s “Teti Microforata” system, a facade solution made from shaped and welded metal profiles using Ø 4 mm round bars. In collaboration with Studio Caruso Torricella and the company’s technical team, more than 5,000 curved panels —each over 6 meters high on both sides— were custom-designed to match the geometry of the structure and blend seamlessly into its architecture.

Industrial design and corporate identity

Beyond technical performance, the project was conceived to express unmistakably the Group’s identity through design and aesthetics.

Teti’s micro-perforated surface and its customized color palette make the tunnel into a visual communication element. The metal profiles, arranged in a chromatic gradient that fades from the green of the steel mill to the blue of the rolling mill, evoke the production flow. Teti thus becomes a distinctive architectural feature, aligned with the Feralpi Group’s corporate image.

This project stands out as a clear example of how industrial architecture can reflect the company’s values, all while enhancing both the work environment and the overall image of the production site.
