What is the mode factor in a double choker hitch? Giorinastri explains

At the beginning of 2025, several customers turned to Giorinastri—specialists in anchoring and lifting systems—for clarification on the coefficient of variation of the working load limit, commonly known as the mode factor. This coefficient defines how the nominal capacity of a sling changes based on its geometric configuration: basket hitch, single choker hitch, or—as in this case—double choker hitch.

Understanding the double choker hitch configuration

In a double choker hitch setup, the sling is wrapped twice around the load, typically bundles of tubes, to prevent internal movement and ensure better grip. Although this configuration is permitted under UNI EN 1492, the standard does not specify the corresponding mode factor, leaving operators without a clear indication of the safe working load to apply.

Giorinastri’s internal tests to define the coefficient

To address customer questions, Giorinastri launched a dedicated testing campaign. Using two dynamometers, the company carried out tensile tests on lifting slings and accessories, replicating the conditions set out in the standard. These tests made it possible to quantify how the double choker hitch affects the actual lifting capacity of the sling.

Verification with RINA and preparation of the technical brochure

Following the preliminary internal results, Giorinastri engaged RINA as the verifying body to perform official tests and experimentally validate the findings. Once the verification process is complete, the company will publish a technical brochure offering customers a certified reference for defining the correct mode factor in double choker applications.

A constant commitment to safety and transparency

With this initiative, Giorinastri reaffirms its commitment to delivering safe lifting solutions, validated equipment and technical support aligned with the practical needs of field operators.
