Wire drawing and braiding bobbin rewinding: innovative solutions by Niehoff and NENA at Interwire

Maschinenfabrik Niehoff and its subsidiary Niehoff Endex North America Inc. (NENA) will showcase their latest technologies at booth 839 during Interwire 2025. Highlights include:
• the ARP 630 pay-off paired with the SMB 4 rewinding line, and
• the MMH 121 multiwire drawing line combined with the RM 201 resistance annealer.
Visitors can also learn about Niehoff’s After Sales Service portfolio, featuring Niehoff Original+ components and the digital service platform myNIEHOFF. These offerings, integral to the NIEHOFF LifeCycle+ service concept, help maximize machine uptime and operational efficiency throughout the equipment’s life span.
Focus on the new machinery
The newly developed SMB 4 rewinding machine, an evolution of the DSA-4 model, is engineered to respool wires from multiwire or fine wire drawing lines onto braiding bobbins. The SMB 4 can process four bobbins simultaneously, automatically supplied from a magazine, allowing it to continuously serve eight to ten braiding machines.
Key innovations include an increased rewinding speed of up to 800 m/min—200 m/min faster than its predecessor—and a magazine positioned at an ergonomic height, reducing operator strain during bobbin removal.
The machine ensures parallel wire arrangement and uniform wire lengths within the bundle, supporting high-speed braiding operations with minimal wire breaks.
Designed for round or flat wires made of copper, aluminum, iron, stainless steel, and textile materials, the SMB 4 also offers online machine and process monitoring through the myNIEHOFF platform.
On display alongside the SMB 4, the MMH 121 multiwire drawing line with RM 201 resistance annealer is capable of drawing 16 wires from 2.05 mm (AWG 12) down to diameters between 0.227 mm and 0.73 mm (AWG 31 to 21) at speeds of up to 40 m/s (7874 fpm).
This compact line saves production space while delivering high productivity and low wire break rates.
The RM 201 features a flexible 2/3-zone resistance annealing system, with optional wire reheating, enabling optimal wire drying, reduced energy consumption, and extended component lifespan through even wear distribution on the contact tubes.
As with the SMB 4, machine and process data can be monitored remotely via myNIEHOFF.
The line produces wires with uniform mechanical properties and precise tolerances, ideal for further processing into high-quality strands, ropes, or braids.
Complete solutions from a single partner
With over 70 years of experience, Maschinenfabrik Niehoff specializes in equipment for the production and processing of non-ferrous wires, excluding extrusion systems. The company focuses on creating reliable, energy-efficient machinery with high productivity, aiming to reduce material waste and CO2 emissions.
Certified under the German Environmental Auditors Board EMAS and a participant in the VDMA’s Blue Competence initiative, Niehoff also collaborates with EcoVadis for CSR evaluations.
The Niehoff Group employs around 1300 people globally, operating manufacturing sites in Germany, Spain, Brazil, the US, the Czech Republic, India, China, and Sweden, supported by service centers in Japan, Singapore, and Mexico.
In North America, Niehoff has been active since 1985, when Niehoff of America was founded. The merger with Endex in 1999 formed Niehoff Endex North America Inc. (NENA), which offers local manufacturing, engineering, sales, and service capabilities for the full Niehoff and ENDEX product lines across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
