Furnace for ingots up to 95 tons, ICMI’s technology for large forgings

Furnace for ingots up to 95 tons, ICMI’s technology for large forgings

A new challenge for ICMI Industrial Furnaces, which is currently manufacturing a furnace for a prestigious European forge. The project involves a fixed-hearth furnace with two doors, designed to heat steel ingots weighing up to 95 tons for subsequent forging operations.

The size of the loads, operating temperatures, and temperature uniformity requirements make this system a particularly significant solution in the field of industrial furnaces for processing large forged components. Let’s take a closer look.

Heating ingots up to 1,280 °C

The furnace can reach a maximum operating temperature of 1,280 °C, a key parameter for bringing the ingots to the thermal conditions required for the subsequent forging process.

When heating large ingots weighing up to 95 tons, temperature control is a critical aspect of the process. The thermal cycle must ensure that the material leaving the furnace is in suitable condition for further processing, while maintaining temperature uniformity within the furnace chamber.

The fixed-hearth, two-door configuration was developed to meet the requirements of the forging operation and the handling of extremely heavy loads.

Regenerative burners and custom automation

The regenerative burners use heat from the exhaust gases to preheat the combustion air, reducing the furnace’s energy requirements and increasing process efficiency. In this project, the regenerative burner combustion system is combined with custom automation developed by ICMI Industrial Furnaces to control furnace operation and the associated process parameters.

ICMI’s technology has made it possible to achieve high levels of temperature uniformity. Under no-load conditions, the furnace guarantees temperature uniformity of ±20 °C within the 600–800 °C range and ±10 °C in accordance with the requirements of the AMS2750G standard.

There is more to come from ICMI Industrial Furnaces. The beginning of 2027 will bring major updates and new developments for the company and its technologies for forging and heat treatment applications.
