Polymer coating as a sustainable alternative to phosphate for wire treatment

Sirio Wire srl, based in Italy, specializes in chemical and electrochemical wire treatment. Its offerings include fumeless HCl pickling, H₂SO₄ electrolytic pickling, ultrasonic and electrolytic cleaning, electroplating, copper and bronzing lines, and phosphating plants.
Sirio Wire’s polymer coating: sustainability and performance
One of the company’s recent innovations is the use of polymer coating as an alternative to traditional phosphating, especially in cold heading and select wire drawing applications. This phosphate-free solution is applied at around 40 °C, delivering significant energy and water savings, along with simplified maintenance.
When used in combination with shot blasting, polymer coating becomes fully environmentally friendly. The process eliminates the need for rinsing, thereby avoiding wastewater treatment. It also operates without corrosive fumes and at a significantly lower temperature than phosphating, further reducing energy consumption.
Polymer coating can be applied in a traditional immersion bath or via aspersion, which helps minimize bath volume. Additionally, it supports inline continuous processing. A typical setup includes shot blasting, hot water spray washing, polymer coating, and drying—optimized for single-wire processing.
