Trafilerie Assi explores a potential lead-free alternative to 36SMnPb14

With growing attention to environmental sustainability, the metallurgical industry is taking a closer look at the materials it uses—especially when it comes to leaded steel. Trafilerie Assi, a company specializing in the production of drawn free-cutting steels, has teamed up with steelmakers and end-users to test a new grade: 36SMn14.
36SMn14: what are the benefits?
This steel grade offers a lead-free alternative to the well-established 36SMnPb14, as it maintains similar mechanical properties while lowering environmental impact and aligning better with international markets that are more sensitive to these issues. The use of lead is especially restricted in Northern Europe and North America, where stricter regulations are in place for products and machined parts (especially fittings and bushings) containing lead.
A first step toward more sustainable free-cutting steel
At the moment, Trafilerie Assi’s production range for 36SMn14 is still limited to diameters from 5 to 10 mm. The company is continuing its tests to evaluate the material’s actual machinability, how it performs during processing, and how it works in various applications.
Even though testing is still underway, early results suggest that 36SMn14 could be a solid alternative—especially when compared to other lead-free grades currently on the market (such as 44SMn28 and 46S20). These are more widely available and more commonly used, but they come with different mechanical characteristics and can be harder to machine.
Looking ahead
Trafilerie Assi makes it clear that the goal isn’t to completely replace leaded grades, which are still essential for many machining applications. Instead, the aim is to offer an additional option to customers who are seeking more sustainable solutions. Over time, introducing 36SMn14 could help supply chains align with international environmental guidelines and encourage innovation in manufacturing processes.
Thanks to its expertise in cold drawing and in handling special materials, Trafilerie Assi has a competitive edge when it comes to fine-tuning these new solutions. The coming months will be crucial to understanding the true potential of this steel grade and determining whether it will earn a permanent spot in the company’s catalog.
For markets that prioritize environmental responsibility, there’s hope that 36SMn14 will soon become a go-to option for combining high performance with sustainability.
