CERATIZIT to compensate greenhouse gas emissions with certified projects

Since March 2025, CERATIZIT has officially started compensating its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through certified climate projects. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Plansee Group to go beyond the boundaries of its own value chain and actively contribute to climate mitigation.
Concrete actions for carbon reduction
Over the past three years, CERATIZIT has implemented a series of impactful measures aimed at reducing its direct emissions. According to Executive Board Spokesman Dr. Andreas Lackner, these efforts have already led to a reduction of more than 20% in GHG emissions. This has been achieved through increased use of renewable energy across all production sites, higher recycling rates—particularly a 95% recycling rate for tungsten—and greater energy efficiency.
The company is also investing in hydrogen technology, including electrolyzers for hydrogen production and systems to reuse process heat and recycled hydrogen. These efforts form part of a broader strategy to minimize environmental impact and move towards full decarbonization.
Targeted compensation for unavoidable emissions
Despite the progress, some emissions remain unavoidable. For the 2025/26 fiscal year, approximately 78 kilotons of CO2e emissions will be offset through certified projects. CERATIZIT has selected two major initiatives: a forest conservation project in Pennsylvania (near the Towanda facility) and a solar power project close to the company’s operations in Mysore and Bangalore, India. Both projects are certified by globally recognized bodies such as the American Carbon Registry (ACR) and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), and follow the guidelines of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
A similar project is currently being evaluated in Europe to ensure regional balance in the company’s compensation efforts.
Working toward net-zero by 2040
CERATIZIT has set an ambitious long-term objective: to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across its value chain by fiscal year 2040. This involves a 90% reduction in absolute emissions from a 2020 baseline, covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
A key part of this plan involves engaging with suppliers, as two-thirds of CERATIZIT's emissions are linked to purchased goods and services. The company aims to work collaboratively with partners to reduce upstream emissions and build a more sustainable supply chain.
The next sustainability report, detailing further progress and updates, will be released in July 2025.
