A technological leap in thread rolling: Rolling Tools digitilizes storage and traceability

Rolling Tools, a company specializing in the design and production of high-precision rolling tools, has recently completed a strategic investment to digitalize its manufacturing and logistics processes. The project involved the installation of an automated vertical warehouse and a fiber-optic marking system with integrated management through QR codes, aimed at improving operational efficiency and traceability throughout the entire tool lifecycle.

High-density automated vertical warehouse

The new automated storage system, consisting of 60 vertical drawers with a total height of 15 meters, enables optimized space management and faster, safer handling of components. The warehouse automation allows for greater material storage capacity and more accurate stock control, improving internal traceability and reducing picking and storage times.

Laser marking and complete digital traceability

At the same time, Rolling Tools introduced a fiber-optic marking machine that applies a unique QR code to each tool. This code allows every piece to be identified and tracked through all stages — from production to reconditioning — while fully integrating with the company’s management software.

This new digital marking and recording system replaces the previous paper-based management, enabling automatic data collection, real-time monitoring, and lifecycle analysis of each reconditioned tool. Integrating the QR code into internal logistics also helps reduce errors and increase the speed of managing incoming and outgoing workflows.

Project co-funded by the Lombardy Region

The initiative was co-funded by the Lombardy Region as part of its programs supporting the digital transformation of manufacturing SMEs, with a particular focus on smart marking and automated logistics. With this contribution, Rolling Tools was able to implement an infrastructure designed for full traceability and integrated management of production data.
