TCT saw blades compared: steel tube cutting test results

TCT saw blades compared: steel tube cutting test results

Fewer blade changes, higher cutting yield, and less downtime. A field test shows how choosing the right circular saw blade can improve steel tube cutting performance.

In industrial steel tube cutting, productivity depends on more than machine performance. Blade life, replacement frequency, and downtime all affect efficiency. Choosing the right tungsten carbide-tipped (TCT) circular saw blade for the application can make a significant difference.

Together with the Moreschi team, we compared cutting tools used under the same operation conditions.

Comparative test: Moreschi Ø600 mm Z100 saw blades

A steel tube manufacturer replaced its previous supplier's blades with Moreschi Ø600 mm Z100 TCT circular saw blades to cut tubes with a diameter of 160 mm and wall thicknesses of 16–18 mm.

The test was conducted under the same production conditions.

The results were:

Parameter Moreschi blades Competitor blades
Blades used 10 14
Total cross-sectional area cut 63.4 m² 46.34 m²
Cross-sectional area cut per blade 6.34 m² 3.31 m²
Blade replacement interval Approx. 24 hours Approx. 8 hours

With Moreschi blades, the customer used 29% fewer blades, reducing consumption from 14 to 10 units. Each blade cut nearly twice as much material: 6.34 m² versus 3.31 m².

Fewer blade changes, less downtime

Blade replacement intervals increased from approximately 8 to 24 hours.

On high-output cutting lines, fewer blade changes mean less downtime, easier tool management, and more consistent production.

Cutting yield per blade is therefore a key factor in overall process costs, alongside purchase price, downtime, and maintenance.

Choosing the right blade for the application

This test highlights the importance of matching saw blades to the material, tube geometry, machine specifications, and cutting conditions.

No single blade is best for every application. Production trials help assess actual blade performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

Sharpening and reconditioning: extending blade life

Moreschi provides more than new saw blades. Its services include sharpening, balancing, restoring cutting geometries, and replacing carbide tips.

Through its Infinity Cut process, Moreschi can give worn blades a second life by restoring their cutting performance while retaining the original blade body, provided it is in suitable condition.
