A project to electrify steelmaking

Boston Metal, a spinout of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is working on a whole new approach to metal processing. Instead of the blast furnace traditionally employed in steelmaking, the startup company has developed an electrolytic cell, which uses electricity rather than carbon to process raw iron ore.
Today iron and steel account for 5% of global CO2 emissions (around 1.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually).

As reported by the MIT Technology Review, Boston Metal aims to prove its process works at a commercial scale – which is always the challenge when interfacing industry and science. A pending funding round will give a kick-start to a large demonstration facility to develop an industrial-scale cell for steel production.
