In May 2012, the produced volume of crude steel in Latina America reached 5.7 million tons, with 348 tons less than in the same month of 2011, representing a decline of - 6%. The variation between April-May 2012 is -1% for the region. Mexico reached 1.6 million tons in May 2012, 7% more than in May 2011. In May 2012, the production of crude steel dropped in Argentina and Brazil (-8% and -12%) compared to May 2011. Regarding finished steel trade, during January-April 2012, there was a regional deficit of -4.1 million tons, significantly higher than the -2.3 million tons imbalance of the same period in 2011. All countries of the region showed a deficit in the period going from January to April 2012. The greatest one was recorded in Mexico, with a volume of 1.5 million tons. Besides Mexico, Colombia and Peru had significant deficits, with 568.922 and 474.283 tons respectively.
