Noisy neighbors and busy streets have always been a problem, especially in the summer, when windows are mostly open. Moreover, remote working and distance learning are increasingly emphasizing the need for quiet rooms within our own living quarters. 

Conventional solutions such as double glazing and wall soundproofing require major renovation work as well as a significant outlay; but what if we told you it may be only a matter of screws?

Yes, you got it right. The Malmö University (Sweden) has recently developed an innovative screw featuring a spring placed inside that may be able to solve all of our noise issues. The concept is quite simple: when installed to fasten two materials (e.g. a wooden joist and a plasterboard), just like a normal screw, the prototype generates a thin resilient mechanical coupling that prevents the sound waves from advancing. Early tests show a sound reduction of nine decibels for a traditional dry wall, which corresponds to a halving of the perceived sound level.

Last but not least, sound-absorbing properties apart, this screw can also help to save floor and ceiling space by reducing the thickness of materials required in building construction.

The invention has already generated wide interest in the world. Researchers are now looking for companies that can test the product on a larger scale. Step up!
