Crude steel production - world’s top 10

Despite a global contraction in 2019, crude steel production rose by 3.4% according to the World Steel Association (1,869.9 Mt - million tons - compared to 1,808.4 Mt in 2018): Asia and the Middle East are the main driving forces of this trend.

China is the major crude steel producer: with 996.3 million tons, the region accounts for 53.3% of the global production share - up from 50.9% in 2018. India (111.2 Mt, up by 1.8%) and Japan (99.3 Mt, down by 4.8%) take, respectively, second and third place.

The US figures, on the one hand, are positive - the production went up by 1.5%, going from 86.6 Mt to 87.9 Mt. The EU ones, on the other hand, not so much: the amount of crude steel manufactured fell by 4.9%, down to 159.4 Mt.
