BUCHAREST (Dow Jones)--Canadian-based Roman Copper Corp. won an outcry auction for the purchase of Romanian state-run copper producer Cupru Min Abrud at a price of EUR200.77 million, the Economy Ministry said, news agency Mediafax reported. The selling price is over threefold higher than the EUR57.3 million start price. Roman Copper outbid Australian Oz Minerals Ltd. (OZMLY) and Dutch-based Dundee Holding BV in the auction. A fourth bidder, Bulgarian Ellatzite Med Ad, was disqualified earlier Monday.
Cupru Min is Romania's largest copper producer. The company's main asset is the Rosia Poieni mining perimeter, which is estimated to hold 60% of the country's copper reserves. Cupru Min has a share of RON24.18 million and is fully owned by the Economy Ministry. The ministry had tried to sell the company twice before.
