BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China's State Administration of Work Safety said Thursday that coal mines with an annual output of 90,000 metric tons or less must halt production until they implement safety measures to prevent gas accidents. If the mines are unable to implement the measures before the end of the year, they may be merged with larger mines that have those capabilities, it added. Mines that continue operating without implementing new safety measures will be punished, the watchdog said. It added that any new accidents would be investigated, with the focus on the relevant departments and people responsible.
