Italian steel industry: over 1 million tons lost, production down 5%

Italy's crude steel production 2024 shows a 5 percent decrease from 2023, with an overall decline of more than 1 million tons.

A critical year for the industry

The latest figures from Federacciai, the Italian steel industry association, highlight a significant contraction in Italy's crude steel production for 2024, down 5.02% from the previous year. This translates to an absolute drop of 1.057 million tons, bringing total output to 20 million tons.

In December 2024 alone, total production decreased by 8.8% year-on-year, amounting to 1.2 million tons, compared to 1.3 million in the same month of 2023.

Long and flat products: diverging trends

The hot-rolled long products sector reflects the industry’s challenges, with a 4.7% drop in December, totaling 682,000 tons compared to 716,000 tons in December 2023. However, on an annual basis, long products, primarily used in construction, held relatively steady, with a slight 0.2% decrease to 11.7 million tons in 2024.

Conversely, hot-rolled flat products, mainly used in automotive, mechanical, and appliance industries, showed a 3.2% year-on-year increase in December, reaching 639,000 tons. However, the overall performance for the year saw a sharp decline, with total production falling by 9.7% to 8.6 million tons.

Federacciai compiles monthly data on crude steel and hot-rolled products, which account for over 99% and 95% of national production, respectively.
