Mirror of the Markets: news from the lubricants industry

Mirror of the Markets: news from the lubricants industry

Each stretch of wire spends only a fraction of a second in contact with the drawing die, but behind that split-second contact sits an entire market of specialized lubricants, quietly enabling the production of everything from tire cord and magnet wire to construction cable. So what does this market look like today, and where is it headed?

We are back with Mirror of the Markets, the series aimed at supporting professionals to understand current developments and emerging opportunities across the metalworking sector. In this chapter, we examine the wire drawing lubricants industry and its critical role in modern wire production.

The column is authored by Dipl.-Ing. Konrad Dengler, a seasoned engineer and technical journalist with a rich background in materials science and industrial technologies.

A simple but crucial step

Lubricants are dry, greasy, or wet substances applied between wire and drawing die, reducing friction so the wire slides smoothly through the die as its diameter is progressively reduced.

Wire drawing uses two main methods. Dry drawing relies on powder lubricants (soaps) and is used for steel wire and heavy reductions, with a phosphate coating often added for high-strength steels. Wet drawing relies on liquid lubricants, such as emulsions, oils, pastes, and synthetics, and is used for small-diameter non-ferrous and stainless steel wires with high surface requirements.

Wire drawing lubricants market size

The wire drawing sector is a relatively small but highly specialized lubricants application field within the broader lubricants market. Market research company PW Consulting estimates the global wire drawing lubricants and soaps market at USD 1.12 billion in 2025, projecting it to reach USD 1.6 billion by 2032 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% over the 2025–2032 period.

Lubricants for carbon steel wire lead the global wire drawing lubricants market, delivering nearly USD 542 million in revenue in 2025 — about 48.2% of the total.

The second-largest segment is lubricants for copper and aluminum wire, which accounted for more than USD 310 million in 2025, representing a market share of approximately 27.6%.

According to Business Research Insights, approximately 60% of wire drawing lubricants are used in the automotive sector, although estimates vary considerably depending on market scope and methodology. As worldwide demand for high-performance materials in automobiles and electronics rises, so does the need for high-quality lubricants.

Other industries that heavily depend on metal wires include the construction and building sector and the growing fields of electricity generation and transmission.

Manufacturers of wire drawing lubricants are meeting growing demand for high-performance lubricants while facing increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact. According to the same Business Research Insights report, about 40% of new lubricant formulations now focus on eco-friendly and biodegradable materials.

Sustainability considerations include the use of renewable raw materials and, in the industrial application of lubricants, long service life, increased tool life, and a reduction in the energy required during use.

Outlook

Hybrid lubricants, which combine mineral-based and synthetic components, and fully synthetic ones are gaining traction for their superior thermal stability, lower viscosity, and stronger performance in high-speed drawing.

Nanotechnology additives, such as silica or other nanoparticles, are being integrated into lubricant formulations to reduce friction. Automation and digitalization based on IoT and AI are also enabling tracking systems, optimized lubricant use, and enhanced process efficiency across smart production lines.
