Scientists discover steel with properties similar to human bones

An international research group of materials scientists guided by the German Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE) has developed a new steel, which is similar in structure to the human bone and thus has a very high fatigue resistance.

The result is an alloy of iron, manganese, nickel and aluminum, with a lamellar, multiphase microstructure that stops the propagation of the cracks at the micro and nano level.

The continuous loading of components, e.g. in trains, airplanes or even power plants, exposes to the risk of material fatigue and breakage. Therefore, this alloy has enormous potential to optimize the safety of structural materials.
