NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. steel import permit applications fell 8% in July compared with preliminary imports in June, the American Iron and Steel Institute said. Permit applications on the month were down 13% from June's total permitted tons.
Total U.S. steel import permits slid to 2.447 million short tons in July from preliminary steel imports of 2.670 tons in June, according to data AISI gleaned from the U.S. Commerce Department's most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis statistics.
Total U.S. steel import permits last month stood at 2.797 short tons.
AISI's members represent about 80% of North American steel capacity.

U.S. import permit tonnage for finished steel was down 5% at 2.01 million tons in July, compared with preliminary imports of 2.11 million tons.
The largest finished steel import permit applications were for South Korea, up 1% from June at 305,000 short tons. Import applications for China fell 8%, to 148,000 tons, while permits for Japan rose 11%, to 136,000 tons.
The estimated finished steel import market share in July was 23%, and the year-to-date share was 22%.
