World crude steel production up 0.8% in 2016, China’s share increases
On January 25th, the World Steel Association released its annual data about world crude steel output in the year 2016. Compared to previous year, the total annual production increased by 0.8% reaching 1,628.5 million tonnes (Mt).
Despite announcements to cut the production capacity, China was able to grow further and exceed 808 million tons produced in a year with a + 1.2% compared to 2015. China’s share of world crude steel production increased from 49.4% to 49.6% in 2016.
Ranked second, there's still Japan with 104.8 Mt, down by -0.3% over 2015. At the third place, India recorded a significant growth. India’s crude steel production for 2016 was 95.6 Mt, up by 7.4% on 2015.
The balance is negative for Europe, losing 2.3% over 2015. The German crude steel output (42.1 Mt) went down by 1.4%, while Italy produced 23.3 Mt, an increase of 6.0% over 2015.
The US production is stable, as well as in Russia. Annual crude steel production for South America recorded a decrease of -10.6% on 2015.
