World's top steel producers

World's top steel producers in 2008. China's insatiable appetite for steel has helped the country's steelmakers overtake most of their Japanese and Korean peers in the top five ranking producers of the world in 2008. According to latest figures from the World Steel Association, China's top steelmaker Baosteel is now the world's third biggest steelmaker, overtaking giants like South Korea's POSCO and Japan's JFE. ArcelorMittal remains as the world's biggest producer, with its closest follower Nippon Steel producing a bit more than one third of Mittal's output. Commodity powerhouse China strengthens its positon as the world's top producing country, now accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total 1.33 billion tonnes in 2008.
