Planetary stranding machine for steel wire ropes

Planetary stranding machines are designed for the production of steel strands and wire ropes requiring high process stability and flexible machine configurations. The stranding cages are engineered to accommodate bobbins with flange diameters from 315 to 2,800 mm, with a maximum bobbin weight of 40 tonnes. Depending on the cage size, the machine design incorporates either encircling bearings for compact configurations or heavy-duty under-roller bearings for larger assemblies, combining high operating speeds with simplified maintenance.
The machines can be equipped with different bobbin braking systems to suit specific production requirements. Available solutions include manual and automatic tension control, as well as systems for measuring and displaying wire or strand back tension throughout the stranding process.
Drive and automation
Planetary stranding machines feature independent drives for the stranding cage and haul-off unit, allowing a wide range of lay lengths to be achieved with continuously adjustable settings. The back-twist system provides variable back-twist control, while dedicated loading drives simplify cage positioning during bobbin replacement.
The automation platform is based on programmable control systems with touchscreen operation for process supervision, machine monitoring and production management. Separate AC or DC drives, speed synchronization, torque and tension control, together with controlled machine stopping, help maintain consistent operating conditions throughout the production cycle.
Spool pay-off and take-up systems
Planetary stranding lines can be equipped with spool pay-off and take-up systems designed for different production layouts. Available in both vertical and horizontal configurations, these units accommodate a wide range of spool and coil sizes. Depending on production speed and spool capacity, gripping systems can be supplied with pneumatic or hydraulic actuation.
Auxiliary equipment
CSM also supplies preformer heads for the precise shaping of rope ends, preparing them for connection and assembly operations, along with rope meter counters for accurate measurement of product length during production, supporting quality control and reducing losses from measurement errors.
