Drahtwerk Wagener: lights and shadows on the future of the spring industry
An associate’s perspective on the 2023 International Congress of the European Spring Industry in Barcelona
Drahtwerk Wagener GmbH & Co. KG, a Germany-based company specializing in drawn steel wire for spring production, participated in the International Congress of Spring Industry. We interviewed the CEO Mr. Giese to gain a valuable insight into his experience at the event.
Can you provide a detailed account of this congress?
“Typically, the event follows a biennial schedule, taking place in years when Messe Wire is not held in Düsseldorf. However, due to Covid-19, this rhythm was disrupted in 2021, resulting in a four-year gap since the last gathering. Historically, it has been a global event, attracting companies and associations from around the world. This year, there were no participants from major countries such as the U.S.A., South Korea, and China, with India being represented by only one association.”
Let’s cut to the chase, what was the discussion about?
“Reports from various countries highlighted that problems are very similar everywhere. Weak demand, skill shortages, rising costs, and additional bureaucratic hurdles, including CBAM and supply chain regulations, all contribute to the difficulties encountered in daily operations. Unfortunately, there are no signs of imminent improvements. Only the Indian representative was very optimistic about the future of the spring industry in his country.”
“Nevertheless, the overall atmosphere was relatively positive. Extensive discussions and debates about the potential for survival in this ongoing crisis took place. There is a consensus that it is essential and desired to support significant customer segments such as the automotive industry on the path of transformation.”
Is there any sign of hope in this situation?
“One advantage of the European spring industry is the relatively medium-sized nature of the companies, which enables specialization and flexibility in adapting to changing conditions. In addition, there is a lot of cooperation among companies, which strengthens the industry's overall competitiveness.”
What’s the current situation for Drahtwerk Wagener itself?
“For us as suppliers, this event is always a great opportunity for market research and building and maintaining customer relationships. We consider ourselves partners in the global spring industry and believe we are well-suited to meet their needs and requirements, particularly as a medium-sized company. We have a substantial customer base across nearly all European countries and view ourselves as a European company integrated into international supply chains.”
While the road ahead may still be uncertain, the event highlighted the determination and optimism of the European spring industry to overcome even the most intricate challenges. For more information on Drahtwerk Wagener GmbH & Co. KG, please visit the corporate website >>
