Company Overview & Heritage
Cancarb Limited, established in 1973 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, stands as a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and distribution of medium thermal carbon black. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Tokai Carbon Group, Cancarb operates the world's largest thermal carbon black production facility. The company's operations are guided by core values of integrity, collaboration, and responsibility, aiming to deliver value to stakeholders through safe, innovative, and environmentally responsible practices. Cancarb proudly states it is the only company globally dedicated 100% to thermal carbon black production.
Specialized Products & Applications
Cancarb's primary offering is its Thermax® brand of thermal carbon black, derived from the thermal decomposition of natural gas, representing one of the purest forms of carbon available industrially. The product portfolio comprises ten different grades, each tailored for specific applications. A significant innovation is Thermax® N990CG, recognized as the world's first purposefully made low Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) medium thermal carbon black. This grade is specifically designed for sensitive applications, including consumer goods, pharmaceutical vial stoppers, and EPDM water gaskets, enabling customers to meet stringent regulatory requirements like EU 1272/2013, GS Mark, and USFDA CFR 177.2600 without compromising quality or performance. Other notable grades include Thermax® N990 for general use, N990REF for refractory applications, N990 Ultra Pure with extremely low impurities, and various N907/N908 Stainless grades for low extractable organics. Additionally, Cancarb offers Carbocolor®, a concrete colorant meeting ASTM C979 standards.
Sustainability & Operational Excellence
Cancarb demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, evidenced by its EcoVadis Platinum CSR Rating, placing it in the top 1% of all rated suppliers. The company significantly contributes to environmental responsibility through its waste heat recovery power plant, which captures exhaust gases from carbon black production to generate 30MW of net electricity for the City of Medicine Hat, effectively reducing approximately 90,000 tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions annually. Further enhancing its green initiatives, Cancarb has commenced a solar utility project, installing 7000 solar panels to provide 3.5 megawatts of renewable electricity for self-supply, aligning with the Tokai Carbon Group's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The company's management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, and it holds a Certificate of Recognition (COR) for its Occupational Health and Safety program, ensuring high standards across its global operations.
