Strecker's electric dual upset butt welder for conductors, with automatic deburring
During “WIRE 2014” in Düsseldorf, August Strecker GmbH & Co. KG presented the electric dual upset butt welder with automatic deburring type MS 500.
The unit comes with a comparatively high nominal rated capacity of 500 kVA, however, is equipped with a 3 phase DC transformer so there won't be a single phase load of the mains supply anymore. The amperage absorbed during a welding cycle is reduced substantially, e.g. divided by two approximately. As a result, fuse protection is facilitated, as otherwise often the local power supply's mains fuses won't be sufficient, but a transformer is installed exclusively for the butt welding machine.
Type MS 500 (3P) offers a welding range for solid copper or solid aluminium conductors dias. 12-42 mm. The main feature undoubtedly is its range for stranded copper conductors 95-1.000 mm² or stranded aluminium conductors 120-1.000 mm², joining these cables without using any tubes. This welding method is a proven and well-tried process, and in fact the only solution for joining submarine cables – and issue of major importance these days with cable companies worldwide. The weld is identical in diameter when compared to the unwelded original material, with a welding zone much shorter than on welds made using tubes. Another positive side effect on dual upset butt welding machines with automatic deburring: no running costs for purchasing tubes as so-called consumable items, no need to keep them in store.
Welding time is very short: a weld on stranded copper conductors 1,000 mm² will only take up to max. 30 seconds when using a dual upset buttwelding machine.
