Company Overview and History
Bright Steels Limited, established in 1919 by Cris Chouler in Malton, North Yorkshire, England, has grown to become a significant producer of bright drawn steel products. The company maintains its status as an independent, family-owned business, a heritage proudly symbolized by its otter trademark. Over its century-long history, Bright Steels has expanded its operations to become the largest producer of bright drawn steel flat and square bars in England and among the largest in Europe.
Products and Services
Bright Steels specializes in the production and stockholding of bright cold drawn steel products, including flat bars, squares, hexagons, and alloy rounds. The company also offers the manufacture of special shapes tailored to customer drawings and specifications. Their cold drawing process ensures products achieve accurate dimensions, precise shapes, and a superior surface finish. Additional services include sawing facilities for close tolerance cut pieces, dedicated warehousing for immediate dispatch, and the provision of thermal heat treatments and crack detection upon request. Products adhere to European, American, and Global standards, as well as specific customer specifications.
Commitment to Quality and Innovation
The company maintains a strong commitment to quality, evidenced by its ISO 9001:2015 certification for the manufacture and supply of bright, cold drawn, and machined steel sections. Recent investments highlight a focus on innovation, including a new drawbench with enlarged drawing carriages, automated coil handling equipment featuring a robot and preparation straightener, and an integrated Siemens control PLC system. A new quality inspection and material testing area supports offline inspection and ultrasonic non-destructive testing, while a refurbished quality assurance and calibration department utilizes advanced equipment like Jones & Shipman cylindrical grinders and shadowgraph machines, alongside Brinell and Rockwell hardness testers.
Sustainability and Operational Excellence
Bright Steels is actively engaged in reducing its environmental footprint, having installed a 62kW solar PV system with 162 panels, generating over 45,000kWh of electricity annually and saving 16 tonnes of CO2. Further initiatives include the use of electric forklifts and company vehicles, LED lighting throughout facilities, paperless documentation, and the installation of energy-efficient 316 stainless steel bonderising tanks. Operational efficiency has been enhanced through the acquisition of Welbeck Transport for logistics, and warehouse improvements such as new cantilever racking and a remote-controlled electric platform transporter for material handling.
