Company Profile and History

Indian Seamless Metal Tubes (ISMT) Limited, initially promoted in 1977 by a group of technocrats, began commercial production of specialized seamless tubes in 1980. Starting with a 15,000 metric tons per annum (MTPA) capacity using an Assel mill, the company expanded significantly, reaching 250,000 MTPA tube-making capacity with the addition of a second Assel Mill and a PQF Mill. ISMT also pursued backward integration by promoting Indian Seamless Steels and Alloys Ltd. (ISSAL) in 1995 to produce alloy steel, its primary raw material. ISSAL later merged with ISMT, increasing steel-making capacity to 350,000 MTPA. In a strategic move, ISMT acquired Structo AB in Sweden for cylinder liners, diversifying its offerings. As of March 2022, ISMT became a subsidiary of Kirloskar Ferrous Industries Limited (KFIL), with a proposed full merger with KFIL effective April 1, 2023, aiming for integrated operations from iron ore to seamless tubes.

Products and Capabilities

ISMT is recognized as one of India's largest integrated specialized seamless tube manufacturers and a globally diversified producer. The company manufactures specialized seamless tubes ranging from 6 to 273 mm in outer diameter (OD). Its advanced alloy steel plants produce a wide spectrum of alloy steels, available in diameters from 20 to 225 mm. ISMT's product portfolio includes Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) for the oil exploration sector and Ultra High Strength (UHS) Tubes, which are hot-finished structural hollow sections conforming to European Standards (EN 10210) for the construction industry. The absence of welds in these seamless sections ensures complete structural integrity and uniform material properties.

Strategic Initiatives and Strengths

The company emphasizes end-to-end solutions for industry-specific customers, leveraging its integrated manufacturing capabilities. To manage operational costs and ensure energy independence, ISMT commissioned a 40 MW thermal coal-based captive power plant in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, in 2012, which caters to over 80% of its power requirements. Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and cost efficiency, ISMT also plans to establish a 70 MW (DC) captive solar plant. This initiative is expected to further reduce operational costs and enhance the company's green energy footprint, reinforcing its position in the market.
